Scottish Rite brethren are welcome to participate with those who are taking their Scottish Rite degrees for the first time at the Minneapolis Valley, at Franklin and Dupont Ave. So. The degrees begin at 6PM, with dinner at 5PM. Bring your dues card to show at the door. The Minneapolis Valley is a treasure, being only one of a few SR valleys in the nation to present all 29 degrees of the Scottish Rite (4th thru 32nd) in full theatrical form, and they do it twice per year. Tonight's schedule:
10th Degree: Elu of the Fifteen - Duties: To be tolerant and liberal. War against fanaticism and persecution with education and enlightenment. Lessons: Ambition creates tyranny and despotism. Fanaticism creates intolerance and persecution.
11th Degree: Elu of the Twelve - Duties: Be earnest, true and reliable. Be a champion of the people. Lessons: Life is a school. Masonry is work.
The 10th Degree, especially, is important to Lake Harriet Masons who have adopted it as their own, and who take all acting roles. Its closing speech on "Religious Tolerance" is a masterpiece of Albert Pike's writing, and inspiring for all Masons.
Read about the Scottish Rite here. It's often called "the college of Masonry" for its deeper dive into the Masonic principles first introduced in the first three degrees of Freemasonry. Scottish Rite degrees allow time for group discussion on how our ideals have impacted many good and great men in history, weaving our impact into the Enlightenment and Western Civilization itself.
